Enzian

Next came Enzian (‘Gentian’), a design which came very close to success. Enzian was an extremely powerful rocket which could almost be considered a pilotless aircraft. It carried a warhead of 500kg of high explosive and was particularly intended for use against formations of heavy bombers. It was designed by Dr Wurster of Holzbach-Kissing AG as a subsonic ground-to-air missile, with a future option of developing it into a supersonic weapon. There were also suggestions of converting the design into ground-to-ground and anti-tank configurations, but these got no further than suggestions

The missile consisted of three main parts: the warhead, of steel or moulded wood; the monocoque fuselage in which were two fuel tanks and two steering control motors; and the tail section holding the power unit, control panel and stern cap, to which vertical fins were attached. This stern cap could be removed in one piece for access to the power unit and control panel. Two swept-back wings of conventional aircraft type were fitted to the fuselage. There were only two control surfaces, mounted in the wings and operated by electric motors through a simple rod transmission system
